July 4th trip

Morehead City and Atlantic Beach, NC - July 4th weekend 2017

Well, we tried...

We arrived in 4 waves over June 29 and 30: Tracy & Wiley (at Hollowells Motel); Dave; Ann, Doug, and Dennis; Teresa & George.  We filled in paperwork with Olympus in Morehead City and loaded our gear on the boat.  Then we checked into our rooms at the Carribe Inn (the other 6 people) on Atlantic Beach.  The dive reports from earlier in the week had been good so we were hoping for some good dives.

We got to the dive shop at 6am on Saturday.  They called Doug just as we were pulling up and told us the boats weren't going out because the waves weren't cooperating.  So we all went to breakfast and then finished the day with the usual naps, reading, sightseeing, eating, and drinking.  We were glad to see that Uber was now operating in the area.

We got to the dive shop at 6am on Sunday.  They weren't handing out boarding passes yet and around 6:15 they called the dive, the waves still weren't cooperating.  The rest of the day was similar to Saturday.

We got to the dive shop at 6am on Monday.  Conditions were a little better so they told us to come back in 45 minutes.  We had breakfast at Four Corners and returned to Olympus.  Conditions were a little better so they were handing out boarding passes.  We finished loading gear and assembling tanks.  It was raining so our gear got an unnecessary rinse.  About 15 minutes later they got a report from a dive boat that had gone out a little earlier.  It was not a good report so they told us to pack up our gear and line up inside for refunds.  So it was back to the hotel, spread gear out to dry, and then the rest of Monday was like Sunday.

Tuesday the group split up with some going home and some continuing the vacation.  Note that the toll stops on the West Virginia Turnpike are now $2 instead of $1.25.  We wished we could have gone diving, but we still managed to have fun at the beach.  Better luck next year!

We have settled on Dominica Ft Young hotel Buddy Dive for the trip.
